The pictures above do not represent the actual rooms. There was Wi-Fi, tv, refridgerator, freezer, microwave, four sets of towels, an ECO line of bathroom amenities. We DID pay $115+ tax but it is the middle of the summer and the room was worth it. We met some fun fisherman and another great couple (lodged in rooms near us) and both parties said they are long-time repeat guests who have always paid between $85-$115, depending on the time of year (not necessarily the owner). I am NOT sure what other reviews mean by saying high price here. Bug spray was provided, although none was needed. My wife and I sat on the quiet porch as the sun went down. I was so incredibly thankful that she let me borrow a few books overnight (about the railroad, bridge, and history of Northampton County). She was more than patient with me and extremely informative about the lodge and local area. Again we stood talking, as I was curious of the history of the place. Later as I was exploring the beautiful and natural surrounding grounds, the same woman poked her head out of the office to let me know she had made an afternoon pot of coffee which was a good surprise after being on the road all morning. She checked us into a room and it was EXACTLY what we needed. As we began talking, I realized that she was in fact an owner renovating the 13-room lodge. Immediately, I felt welcome when a well-presented woman put down her laptop and stood from the porch bench, smiled, and waved. I admit that I was apprehensive, as not many lodging accommodations on the highway sit back in "the woods". going "home" for the holiday (even though it wasn't one). It felt like we had pulled off the highway into a family members driveway. Passing through Cape Charles, we stopped here at the old Rittenhouse Lodge (now called Milestone Lodge). A most interesting fellow who is unapologetic in his assessment of the 21'st century.ĭon't miss your chance to return to the previous millennium! We had a really nice two nights there and look backward to return some day. If you have an interest in Cape Charles history, amber glass or politics, "set a spell" with him on the front porch of the office. He went out of his way to make reservations for us at "Aqua" where we quaffed oysters on the half shell and martinis, mesmerized by the sun setting over the Chesapeake. After check-in, he will personally escort you to your room, fine tune the lighting and air temp and ascertain that all your needs are met. The owner/desk clerk/concierge/coffee maker is octogenarian Bob Rittenhouse. The fluffed-up boutique size towels will have you thinking "Is this the best shower I've ever had?" The deep well-water quality is superb and is delivered copiously in the shower. The bathroom's rose/salmon colored fixtures will seem dated to some folks, but remembered with a smile by others. The room is much larger than today's standard and its large, small-paned picture window looks out on a park-like setting. The Rittenhouse is straight out of 1960 and reflects that era's building esthetics - Colonial Revival. Altogether, a lovely spot to walk your lucky dog. The Motor Lodge grounds are covered with huge loblolly pines and rhododendrens and there are quaint little frog ponds and wooden bridges. The rear borders grassy fields and woods that are pet safe. We requested a room on the back side because we were traveling with our two setters. It is a true motor lodge in the fifty's sense you drive right up to your room, no shlepping your bags down endless halls! I had read the reviews for the Rittenhouse Motor Lodge and HAD to give it a try. My wife and I just returned to Freeport, Maine from a trip to Cape Charles and Williamsburg, VA.
